Section 72

74 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Original German

Zweyter Abschnitt.

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

Second Division

Contract

72 Property whose side of existence or externality is no longer merely a thing, but contains within itself the moment of a will—and thus of another will—comes about through contract. Contract is the process in which the following contradiction presents itself and is mediated: I am, and remain, an owner existing for myself and excluding the other's will precisely insofar as, within a will identical with the other's, I cease to be an owner.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

Second Division

Contract

72 Property whose side of existence or externality is no longer just a thing, but contains the element of a will—and therefore of another will—comes about through contract. Contract is the process that presents and mediates this contradiction: I am and remain an owner existing for myself and excluding the other person's will only insofar as, within a will identical with the other's, I cease to be an owner.
