Section 224

226 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

224 As the public promulgation of the laws falls under the rights of subjective consciousness (§ 215), so too does the possibility of knowing the realization of the law in the particular case, namely the course of external actions, of legal grounds, and so on, since this course is in itself a generally valid history, and the case, according to its particular content, concerns only the interest of the parties, but its universal content, the right at stake in it, and the decision upon it, concerns the interest of all: the publicity of the administration of justice.

Deliberations among the members of the court over the judgment to be delivered are expressions of still particular opinions and views, and by their nature therefore nothing public.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

224 The public announcement of the laws falls under the rights of subjective consciousness (§ 215). So too does the possibility of knowing the realization of the law in the particular case, that is, the course of external actions, legal grounds and so on. This course is in itself a history of general validity. The case, in its particular content, concerns only the interest of the parties. But the universal content, the right in it, and its decision concern the interest of all. This is the publicity of the administration of justice.

When the members of the court deliberate among themselves on the judgment to be given, they are expressing opinions and views that are still particular. By their nature, then, these deliberations are not public.
