Section 192

194 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

192 As real Dasein, needs and means become a being for others, since satisfaction is reciprocally conditioned by their needs and labor. The abstraction that becomes a quality of the needs and of the means (see the preceding section) also becomes a determination of the mutual relation of individuals to one another; this universality as being recognized is the moment that makes them, in their isolation and abstraction, concrete as social needs, means and ways of satisfaction.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

192 As things with a real existence, needs and means become a being for others. Those others' needs and work mutually condition satisfaction. The abstraction that becomes a quality of needs and means (see the preceding section.) also comes to define how individuals relate to one another. This universality, as being recognized, is what makes them, in their isolation and abstraction, into concrete, social needs, means, and ways of satisfying them.
