Section 193

195 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

193 This moment thus becomes a particular determination of purpose for the means as such and for their possession, as well as for the manner and mode of satisfying needs. It further contains immediately the demand for equality with others in this respect; the need for this equality, on the one side, and the making of oneself equal, imitation, as on the other side the need of the particularity just as much present therein, to assert itself through some mark of distinction—this becomes itself a real source of the multiplication of needs and of their diffusion.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

193 This element thus becomes a particular purpose governing the means themselves and their possession, as well as the way needs are satisfied. It also directly contains the demand for equality with others in these respects. On one side there is the need for this equality, and making oneself equal to others—imitation. On the other is the equally present need of particularity to assert itself through some distinction. Both become actual sources of the multiplication and spread of needs.
