Section 116

118 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

116 It is indeed not my own deed when things of which I am the owner, and which as external stand and work in manifold connection (as can also be the case with myself as a mechanical body or as a living being), cause harm to others. Yet this falls upon me more or less, because those things are in general mine, though in accordance with their own nature they are subject only more or less to my mastery, attention, and so on.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

116 It is not my own deed when things of which I am the owner, and which as external things stand and act in many connections (as can also be the case with myself as a mechanical body or as a living being), cause harm to others. But the harm falls on me to a greater or lesser degree. Those things are, after all, mine, yet by their own nature they are subject to my control, attention and so on only to a greater or lesser degree.
