Section 114

116 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

114 The right of the moral will contains three sides.

a) The abstract or formal right of the action: that, as it is carried out in immediate being-there, its content be mine in general, so that it be the resolve of the subjective will.

b) The particular of the action is its inner content: α) how its universal character is determined for me, which constitutes the worth of the action and that by which it counts for me — the intention; β) its content, as my particular purpose of my particular subjective being-there, is welfare.

c) This content, as inner, raised at the same time into its universality, into the objectivity that is in and for itself, is the absolute purpose of the will, the good, in the sphere of reflection with the opposition of subjective universality, which is partly evil, partly conscience.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

114 The right of the moral will contains three sides.

a) The abstract or formal right of action: that, as carried out in immediate existence, its content is in general mine, so that it is the purpose of the subjective will.

b) The particular side of action is its inner content. α) It is how its universal character is determined for me, which makes up the worth of the action and the way it counts for me — the intention. β) Its content, as my particular aim, belonging to my particular subjective existence, is welfare.

c) This content, as something inner, is at the same time raised into its universality, into the objectivity that exists in and for itself. It is the absolute aim of the will, the good. In the sphere of reflection it stands opposed by subjective universality, which is partly evil and partly conscience.
