Section 315

317 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

315 The opening of this opportunity for knowledge has the more general side that thereby public opinion first arrives at true thoughts and at insight into the condition and concept of the state and its affairs, and so first at a capacity to judge of them more rationally; and then also learns to know and to respect the business, the talents, virtues and skills of the state authorities and officials. As these talents obtain in such publicity a powerful opportunity for development and a stage of high honor, so publicity is in turn the remedy against the self-conceit of individuals and of the multitude, and a means of education for them, and indeed one of the greatest.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

315 Opening up this chance for knowledge has a more general side. Only in this way does public opinion come to true thoughts and to insight into the condition and concept of the state and its affairs, and so to an ability to judge them more rationally. And then it also learns to know and respect the business, talents, virtues and skills of the state authorities and officials. Such publicity gives these talents a powerful opportunity to develop and a stage for high honor. It is in turn the remedy against the conceit of individuals and of the crowd, and a means of education for them, and one of the greatest.
