Section 313

315 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

313 By this separation not only does the maturity of decision gain greater security through a plurality of instances, and the contingency of a mood of the moment be removed, as well as the contingency which decision by a majority of votes can take on, but above all the estates element is less likely to come to stand directly opposed to the government; or, if the mediating moment also finds itself on the side of the second estate, the weight of its view is strengthened all the more, in that it so appears more impartial and its opposition neutralized.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

313 This separation does several things. It gives greater security to the maturity of the decision through a number of instances. It removes the accidental influence of the mood of the moment, and also the accident that can attach to a decision by majority of votes. But above all, the estates element is less likely to stand directly opposed to the government. And if the mediating element is also found on the side of the second class, the weight of its view is strengthened all the more, because it then appears more impartial and its opposition appears neutralized.
