Section 288

290 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

288 The common particular interests that fall within civil society and lie outside the universal of the state itself, which is in and for itself (§ 256), are administered in the corporations (§ 251) of communities and other trades and estates, and by their authorities, directors, administrators, and the like. Insofar as the affairs they attend to are, on the one hand, the private property and interest of these particular spheres, and their authority in this respect also rests upon the confidence of their fellow members of the estate and their citizen bodies, while, on the other hand, these circles must be subordinate to the higher interests of the state, the filling of these offices will generally involve a mixture of ordinary election by those concerned with confirmation and determination by a higher authority.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

288 The shared particular interests that fall within civil society and lie outside the universal in and for itself of the state itself (§ 256) are administered by the corporations (§ 251) of communities and of other trades and estates, and by their authorities, heads, administrators, and the like. On the one hand, the affairs they manage are the private property and interest of these particular spheres. In this respect their authority rests partly on the confidence of their fellow estate members and civic communities. On the other hand, these circles must be subordinate to the state's higher interests. In general, therefore, filling these positions will involve a combination of election by the interested parties in common and confirmation and appointment by a higher authority.
