Section 287

289 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Original German

287 B. Die Regierungs-Gewalt.

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

B. The Executive Power

287 Distinct from decision are the execution and application of princely decisions, and in general the continuation and maintenance of what has already been decided: the existing laws, arrangements, institutions for common purposes, and the like. This business of subsumption in general comprises the executive power, which also includes the judicial and police powers. These relate more immediately to the particular affairs of civil society and assert the universal interest within these purposes.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

287 B. The governmental power.

Distinct from decision is the carrying out and application of the prince's decisions: in general, continuing and maintaining what has already been decided, the existing laws, arrangements, institutions for common purposes, and so on. The governmental power includes this general work of bringing particulars under the universal. It also includes the judicial and police powers. These relate more directly to the particular affairs of civil society and assert the universal interest within these purposes.
