Section 174
Musean translation
Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.
174 The children have the right to be nourished and educated out of the common wealth of the family. The right of the parents to the services of the children, as services, is grounded on and limited to what is common in the care of the family in general. In the same way the right of the parents over the arbitrary choice of the children is determined by the end of keeping them in discipline and educating them. The end of punishments is not justice as such, but of a subjective, moral nature: to deter freedom that is still caught in nature, and to raise the universal into their consciousness and will.
Plain English translation
Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.
174 Children have the right to be fed and educated out of the family's common fortune. The parents' right to the children's services, as services, rests on the shared character of family care in general, and is limited by it. In the same way, the parents' right over the children's arbitrary choice is set by the purpose of keeping them disciplined and bringing them up. The purpose of punishment is not justice as such. It is subjective and moral in nature. It is to deter a freedom that is still caught up in nature, and to raise the universal into the children's awareness and will.
