Section 173

175 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

173 C. The Education of the Children and the Dissolution of the Family.

In the children the unity of the marriage, which as substantial is only intimacy and disposition, but as existing is divided between the two subjects, becomes, as unity itself, an existence for itself and an object, which they love as their love, as their substantial existence.—On the natural side, the presupposition of immediately present persons—as parents—becomes here a result—a progression that runs out into the infinite progress of generations begetting and presupposing one another—the way in which, in finite naturalness, the simple spirit of the Penates presents its existence as species.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

173 C. The Education of the Children and the Dissolution of the Family.

In the children, the unity of the marriage becomes an existence for itself, and an object, as unity itself. In substance this unity is only inwardness and attitude, but in existence it is divided between the two partners. The parents love the child as their love and as their substantial existence. On the natural side, the presupposition of immediately present persons, the parents, becomes here a result. This is a progression that runs out into the endless progress of generations producing one another and presupposing one another. It is the way in which, in finite naturalness, the simple spirit of the Penates presents its existence as species.
