Section 98
Musean translation
Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.
98 The violation, as affecting only external existence or possession, is an evil, a harm to some form of property or wealth; the cancelation of the violation as an injury is civil satisfaction as compensation, insofar as such compensation can take place at all.
In this aspect of satisfaction, wherever the injury is a destruction and generally cannot be restored, the universal character of the injury, as value, must already take the place of its qualitative, specific character.
Plain English translation
Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.
98 Considered only as affecting external existence or possession, a violation is an evil, a loss to some form of property or wealth. Canceling the violation as damage takes the form of civil redress through compensation, insofar as compensation is possible at all.
Even in this aspect of redress, the specific qualitative character of the loss must be replaced by its universal character as value, insofar as the damage amounts to destruction and cannot be restored at all.
