Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

8 The further determinacy of particularization (β, § 6) constitutes the distinction between the forms of the will. a) Insofar as the determinacy is the formal opposition of subjective and objective, as external immediate existence, this is the formal will as self-consciousness. It finds an external world before it and, as individuality returning into itself within determinacy, is the process of translating the subjective end into objectivity through the mediation of activity and a means. In spirit as it is in and for itself, in which determinacy is wholly its own and true (Encyclopedia, § 363), the relation of consciousness constitutes only the side of the will’s appearance, which is no longer considered here on its own.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

8 The more specific character of particularization (β, § 6) produces the difference between the will's forms. a) Insofar as the determinacy is the formal opposition between subjective and objective as external, immediate existence, this is the formal will as self-consciousness, which finds an external world already there. As individuality returning into itself within determinacy, it is the process of transferring the subjective aim into objectivity through the mediation of activity and a means. In spirit as it is in and for itself, in which the determinacy is entirely its own and true (Encyclopedia, § 363), the relationship of consciousness makes up only the aspect of the will's appearance. Here this is no longer considered by itself.
