Section 296

298 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

296 That dispassion, integrity, and mildness of conduct should become customary depends partly upon direct ethical and intellectual education, which counterbalances spiritually the mechanical element and the like involved in learning the so-called sciences of these spheres, the necessary training in business, actual work, and so forth. The size of the state is also a principal moment: it weakens the weight of family and other private connections, and likewise makes revenge, hatred, and other such passions more powerless and hence more blunted. In attending to the great interests present in a great state, these subjective sides disappear of themselves, and the habit of universal interests, views, and affairs arises.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

296 Calmness, honesty and mildness in conduct become custom partly through the direct ethical and intellectual education of officials. This education balances the spirit against what is mechanical in learning the so-called sciences of these fields, in the needed practice in the business, in the actual work, and so on. They also become custom partly through the size of the state, which is a main factor. Size weakens the weight of family and other private ties, and it makes revenge, hatred and other such passions less powerful and so duller. In dealing with the great interests present in a large state, these subjective sides fade away by themselves, and a habit of universal interests, views and business develops.
