Section 250

252 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Original German

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

250 b. The Corporation.

The agricultural estate has, in the substantiality of its family and natural life, its concrete universal immediately in itself, in which it lives; the universal estate has in its determination the universal as such as the end of its activity and as its ground. The middle between the two, the estate of trade and industry, is essentially directed to the particular, and the corporation is therefore chiefly proper to it.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

b. The Corporation.

250 The agricultural class has its concrete universal directly within itself, in the substantial character of its family and natural life, and it lives in that universal. The universal class has the universal itself, for its own sake, as the purpose of its activity and as its ground, because of its vocation. The class of trade and industry lies between the two. It is directed essentially toward the particular, and so the corporation is especially proper to it.
