Section 230

232 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

C. Police and Corporation

230 In the system of needs, the subsistence and welfare of each individual is a possibility, whose actuality is conditioned as much by his arbitrary choice and natural particularity as by the objective system of needs; through the administration of justice, the violation of property and personality is expunged. But right actual in particularity contains both that the contingencies in the way of this end or that be sublated, and that the undisturbed security of person and property be brought about, and also that there be securing of the subsistence and welfare of individuals — that particular welfare be treated and realized as right.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

230 C. The Police and the Corporation.

In the system of needs, the subsistence and well-being of each individual is a possibility. Its actuality is conditioned by his arbitrary choice and natural particularity, and equally by the objective system of needs. Through the administration of justice, the violation of property and personality is wiped out. But right that is actual in particularity contains two things. One is that accidents working against one purpose or another are removed, and that the undisturbed security of person and property is brought about. The other is the securing of the subsistence and well-being of individuals, so that particular well-being is treated and realized as a right.
