Section 199

201 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

c) Wealth

199 In this dependence and reciprocity of labor and of the satisfaction of needs, subjective selfishness turns into the contribution toward the satisfaction of the needs of all others—into the mediation of the particular through the universal as a dialectical movement—so that in acquiring, producing, and enjoying for himself, each one thereby produces and acquires for the enjoyment of the rest. This necessity, which lies in the all-sided entanglement of the dependence of all, is now for each individual the universal, abiding wealth (see § 170.), which contains for him the possibility of partaking of it through his cultivation and skill, so as to be secure in his subsistence, just as this acquisition, mediated through his labor, sustains and increases the universal wealth.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

c) Resources

199 In this dependence and mutuality of work and the satisfaction of needs, subjective selfishness turns into a contribution toward satisfying everyone else's needs. It becomes the mediation of the particular through the universal, a dialectical movement. In earning, producing, and enjoying for himself, each person thereby produces and earns for the enjoyment of others. This necessity, which lies in the complete interweaving of everyone's dependence, is now for each person the universal, lasting resources (see § 170.). These hold out the possibility of sharing in them through his education and skill, so that his livelihood is secured. In turn, what he earns through his work preserves and increases these universal resources.
