Section 197

199 of 362 sections in Elements of the Philosophy of Right by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel

Musean translation

Machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from Hegel's German in the Berlin Nicolai first edition, dated 1821. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360, including the author's remarks and notes; no later Gans additions.

197 In the multiplicity of the determinations and objects that engage interest, theoretical culture develops—not only a multiplicity of representations and cognitions, but also a mobility and quickness of representing and of passing from one representation to another, the grasp of involved and universal relations, and so forth—the culture of the understanding generally, and thereby also of language.—Practical culture through labor consists in the need, generated in the process, and the habit of occupation generally, then in the limitation of one's doing, partly according to the nature of the material, but partly and chiefly according to the arbitrary choice of others, and in a habit, acquired through this discipline, of objective activity and of universally valid skills.

Plain English translation

Independent machine-assisted Plain English translation made directly from the German first-edition source, not from the Musean edition or an existing English translation. Complete preface, introduction and sections 1–360 with the author's remarks and notes.

197 The variety of objects and features that attract interest develops theoretical education. This includes not just a variety of representations and items of knowledge, but also an agility and speed in forming representations and moving from one to another, grasping complex and general relationships, and so on. It develops the understanding generally and, with it, language. Practical education through work consists in the need for occupation, and the habit of it, that work generates. It then consists in limiting one's action, partly according to the nature of the material, but chiefly according to other people's choices. This discipline produces the habit of objective activity and of generally applicable skills.
