Yasna 34 — Ahunavaiti Gatha

34.1. The deeds, the words, the acts of worship through which you establish immortality and Asha for them, Mazda, and Khshathra together with wholeness—these offerings, Ahura, are set in your hand by us in foremost abundance.

34.2. And all these have been given you through mind and through Vohu Manah, and through the life-giving deeds of the man whose soul keeps company with Asha. Around your dwelling, Mazda, let them stand in praise, celebrated with songs.

34.3. Then to you, Ahura, and to Asha, with reverence I bring an offering: all the living creations within Khshathra, those Vohu Manah has fostered. For I mean to approach you, Mazda, with all the blessings of the beneficent.

34.4. Then, Ahura, we seek your fire—strong through Asha, swift and mighty in its aid, a manifest help to the one who supports it, but, Mazda, with the powers of its hands, a visible wound to the hostile.

34.5. What is your Khshathra? What is your power, Mazda, for the deed through which I might be united with you—through Asha and Vohu Manah—to protect the poor? We proclaim you above all, above the daēvas, the predatory creatures, and mortal men.

34.6. If you truly are thus, Mazda, with Asha and Vohu Manah, then give me a sign of it through all the turning-points of this existence, so that, worshiping and praising you, I may come before you with rejoicing.

34.7. Where are your righteous ones, Mazda, who possess the insight of Vohu Manah? Though deprived of prosperity and even of gain, I shall awaken understanding with inspired words. I know no other than you; therefore protect us through Asha.

34.8. For by those deeds they frighten us—those among whom many are marked as assailants—because of the powerful pride of those who are weak, because of their enmity toward your covenant, Mazda. Vohu Manah is far from those who do not keep Asha in mind.

34.9. Those who, though knowing, abandon through evil deeds Spenta Armaiti, the cherished one belonging to you, Mazda, because they lack Vohu Manah—from them Asha withdraws far away, as wild beasts withdraw from us.

34.10. The wise one has proclaimed that the deeds of Vohu Manah are to be grasped, and Spenta Armaiti the beneficent, knowing the true foundations of Asha. All these, Ahura Mazda, are messengers within your Khshathra.

34.11. Both wholeness and immortality are yours for nourishment; through the Khshathra of Vohu Manah, Armaiti grows together with Asha. Through these, through enduring life and strength, Mazda, you are the foe of the foes.

34.12. What is your ordinance? What do you desire? What praise, or what act of worship, is to be heard? Proclaim it, Mazda, so that the rewards of your ordinances may be discerned. Teach us through Asha the well-traveled paths of Vohu Manah.

34.13. That path, Ahura, which you told me belongs to Vohu Manah—the path of the daēnā of the benefactors, along which a deed well made flourishes through Asha: the reward promised to the beneficent, Mazda, whose giver you are.

34.14. For that desirable reward, Mazda, you have given to embodied life: the deeds of Vohu Manah, for those who labor in the working-place of the Cow. By your good understanding, Ahura, they advance the works of wisdom through Asha.

34.15. Mazda, now declare to me the best words and deeds, so that through Vohu Manah and Asha I may praise them. Through your Khshathra, Ahura, by your will, make existence fresh and true. (..) With this reverence I implore you, hands outstretched: first, Mazda, for the aid of Spenta Mainyu through Asha; for all the deeds of Vohu Manah, and for the wisdom by which you may satisfy the soul of the Cow. 34.1. The deeds, the words, and the acts of worship through which you grant them Immortality and Asha, Mazda, and Dominion together with Wholeness—these, Ahura, are placed in our hands as the foremost offerings to you.

34.2. All these things are yours through Good Mind and through the Spirit: the creations of the Bountiful One and the deeds of the man whose soul follows Asha. They surround the living world belonging to you, Mazda, with songs of praise.

34.3. So, Ahura, with reverence I bring you and Asha an offering: all the creatures of life within your Dominion, those whom one has nurtured through Good Mind. For the wise who give well, Mazda, gain benefit through all who are yours.

34.4. Ahura, through Asha we seek your powerful fire, swift and mighty, visibly helping the supporter but bringing visible injuries upon the hostile through the power of its hands, Mazda.

34.5. What is your Dominion? What is your power, Mazda, by which I may act in accordance with you, through Asha and Good Mind, so as to protect the poor? We proclaim you above all others, above the daēvas, predatory creatures, and mortals.

34.6. If you truly are so, Mazda, together with Asha and Good Mind, then give me a sign of this, through all the guiding principles of this existence, so that I may come before you worshiping and praising, and may find confidence.

34.7. Where are those devoted to you, Mazda, who understand Good Mind and, even amid misfortune and distress, make its teaching prosper? I know no one other than you. Therefore protect us through Asha.

34.8. For they frighten us by those deeds through which many are placed in danger, because the powerful threaten the weaker, disregarding your firm covenant, Mazda. Asha is not in their thoughts, and Good Mind stays far from them.

34.9. Those who, although knowing it, abandon Bountiful Ārmaiti—your cherished one, Mazda—through evil deeds and because they are strangers to Good Mind: Asha withdraws far from them, as wild beasts flee from us.

34.10. The person of good wisdom has declared that the deed of Good Mind is to grasp Bountiful Ārmaiti, knowing her to be the true companion of Asha. All these, Ahura Mazda, are swift messengers within your Dominion.

34.11. Both Wholeness and Immortality serve as nourishment for you. Through the Dominion of Good Mind, Ārmaiti grows together with Asha in enduring vitality and strength. Through these, Mazda, you are the enemy of the enemies.

34.12. What is your directive? What do you desire? What praise or worship is to be proclaimed? Tell me plainly, Mazda, so that the rewards of your ordinances may be distributed. Teach us, through Asha, the paths belonging to Good Mind.

34.13. Ahura, that is the road of Good Mind that you told me about: the well-made path of the daēnā of the benefactors, which advances through Asha alone toward the reward prepared for those who give well—a reward whose giver you are, Mazda.

34.14. For that desirable reward, Mazda, you have given to embodied life through deeds of Good Mind. Those who work in care of the Cow cause your good teaching to prosper, Ahura, through the wisdom of Asha.

34.15. Mazda, now tell me the best words and deeds. Through Good Mind and Asha, I will honor them with praise.
