Musean translation

Complete machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from the Sanskrit, independently of the Plain English edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.

1.9.1 "Where does this world find its resting place?" "In space," he said. "All these beings arise from space alone and return into space. Space is greater than these; space is their final refuge."

1.9.2 This is the Udgitha that is higher than the high; this is the boundless. Whoever knows thus and meditates on the Udgitha as higher than the high gains what is higher than the high and wins worlds higher than the high.

1.9.3 After teaching this to Udarashandilya, Atidhanvan Shaunaka said, "As long as your descendants know this Udgitha, their life in this world will be higher than the high.

1.9.4 "So too will be their world in the world beyond." Whoever knows thus and meditates on it has a life in this world higher than the high, and so too a world in the world beyond—a world in the world beyond.

Plain English translation

Complete machine-assisted Plain English translation made independently and directly from the Sanskrit, not from the Musean edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.

1.9.1 "What does this world depend on?" "Space," he answered. "All these beings come from space and return to space. Space is greater than they are. Space is their final destination."

1.9.2 This Udgitha is greater than the greatest. It has no limit. Someone who knows this and meditates on the Udgitha as greater than the greatest has an increasingly excellent life and wins increasingly excellent worlds.

1.9.3 After teaching this to Udarashandilya, Atidhanvan Shaunaka said, "As long as your descendants know this Udgitha, their life in this world will become increasingly excellent.

1.9.4 "So will the world they gain in the next world." Someone who knows this and meditates in this way has an increasingly excellent life in this world, and likewise a world in the next—a world in the next.
