Musean translation

Complete machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from the Sanskrit, independently of the Plain English edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.

5.11.1 Prachinashala Aupamanyava, Satyayajna Paulushi, Indradyumna Bhallaveya, Jana Sharkarakshya, and Budila Ashvatarashvi—these men, prosperous householders and deeply learned in sacred lore, gathered to consider: "What is the Self? What is Brahman?"

5.11.2 They agreed, "Friends, Uddalaka Aruni is now studying this Self, Vaishvanara. Come, let us go to him." So they went to him.

5.11.3 He reflected, "These prosperous householders, so deeply learned in sacred lore, will question me. I may not be able to answer them fully. I should direct them to someone else."

5.11.4 He said to them, "Friends, Ashvapati Kaikeya is now studying this Self, Vaishvanara. Come, let us go to him." So they went to him.

5.11.5 When they arrived, he had the honors due a guest prepared for each of them separately. Rising in the morning, he said, "In my realm there is no thief, no miser, no drunkard, no one without established sacred fires, no one unlearned, no adulterer—how, then, an adulteress? Revered sirs, I am about to offer a sacrifice. As much wealth as I give to each officiating priest, I will give to each of you. Revered sirs, please stay."

5.11.6 They said, "A person should state the very purpose for which he has come. You are now studying this Self, Vaishvanara. Tell us of that alone."

5.11.7 He told them, "In the morning I will answer you." Early in the day they approached him with fuel in their hands. Without formally initiating them, he spoke to them as follows.

Plain English translation

Complete machine-assisted Plain English translation made independently and directly from the Sanskrit, not from the Musean edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.

5.11.1 Prachinashala Aupamanyava, Satyayajna Paulushi, Indradyumna Bhallaveya, Jana Sharkarakshya, and Budila Ashvatarashvi were wealthy householders deeply learned in sacred tradition. They met and discussed the question, "What is the Self? What is Brahman?"

5.11.2 They came to this decision: "Gentlemen, Uddalaka Aruni is now studying this Self Vaishvanara. Let us go to him." So they went to him.

5.11.3 He thought, "These wealthy householders, so deeply learned in sacred tradition, will question me. I may not be able to answer them fully. I had better direct them to someone else."

5.11.4 He told them, "Gentlemen, Ashvapati Kaikeya is now studying this Self Vaishvanara. Let us go to him." So they went to him.

5.11.5 When they arrived, the king had each of them honored separately. When he rose the next morning, he said, "In my kingdom there is no thief, no miser, no drunkard, no one who has failed to establish the sacred fires, no one without learning, and no sexually promiscuous man—much less a sexually promiscuous woman. Gentlemen, I am about to perform a sacrifice. I will give you as much wealth as I give each officiating priest. Please stay."

5.11.6 They said, "A person should state the purpose for which they travel. You are now studying this Self Vaishvanara. Tell us about that."

5.11.7 He told them, "I will answer you in the morning." The next morning they approached him with firewood in their hands. Without putting them through an initiation, he told them this.
