Musean translation
Complete machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from the Sanskrit, independently of the Plain English edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.
1.11.1 Then the sacrificer said to him, "Revered sir, I wish to know who you are." "I am Ushasti Chakrayana," he answered.
1.11.2 The sacrificer said, "I sought you for all these priestly offices. When I could not find you, I chose others.
1.11.3 "But let you yourself serve me in all the priestly offices." "Agreed. Then let these men sing praise with my permission. But whatever wealth you give them, give that much to me." "Agreed," said the sacrificer.
1.11.4 Then the Prastotri approached him. "Revered sir, you told me, 'Prastotri, if you sing the Prastava without knowing the deity joined to the Prastava, your head will fall off.' Which deity is that?"
1.11.5 "Life-breath," he answered. "All these beings enter life-breath alone and rise from life-breath. This is the deity joined to the Prastava. Had you sung the Prastava without knowing it, your head would have fallen off, after I had spoken to you thus."
1.11.6 Then the Udgatri approached him. "Revered sir, you told me, 'Udgatri, if you sing the Udgitha without knowing the deity joined to the Udgitha, your head will fall off.' Which deity is that?"
1.11.7 "The sun," he answered. "All these beings sing to the sun standing high above. This is the deity joined to the Udgitha. Had you sung the Udgitha without knowing it, your head would have fallen off, after I had spoken to you thus."
1.11.8 Then the Pratihartri approached him. "Revered sir, you told me, 'Pratihartri, if you sing the Pratihara without knowing the deity joined to the Pratihara, your head will fall off.' Which deity is that?"
1.11.9 "Food," he answered. "All these beings live by taking food to themselves. This is the deity joined to the Pratihara. Had you sung the Pratihara without knowing it, your head would have fallen off, after I had spoken to you thus—after I had spoken to you thus."
Plain English translation
Complete machine-assisted Plain English translation made independently and directly from the Sanskrit, not from the Musean edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.
1.11.1 Then the patron of the sacrifice said to him, "Sir, may I know who you are?" "I am Ushasti Chakrayana," he answered.
1.11.2 The patron said, "I looked for you for all these priestly duties. Because I could not find you, I chose others.
1.11.3 "But please take all the priestly duties for me yourself." "All right," Ushasti said. "But let these same men sing with my permission. Give me as much money as you give them." "All right," the patron replied.
1.11.4 Then the Prastava singer approached him. "Sir, you told me, 'If you sing the Prastava without knowing the god connected with it, your head will fall off.' Which god is that?"
1.11.5 "Life-breath," he answered. "All these beings enter life-breath and rise out of life-breath. This is the god connected with the Prastava. If you had sung it without knowing that god, your head would have fallen off after my warning."
1.11.6 Then the Udgitha singer approached him. "Sir, you told me, 'If you sing the Udgitha without knowing the god connected with it, your head will fall off.' Which god is that?"
1.11.7 "The sun," he answered. "All these beings sing to the sun when it is high above. This is the god connected with the Udgitha. If you had sung it without knowing that god, your head would have fallen off after my warning."
1.11.8 Then the Pratihara singer approached him. "Sir, you told me, 'If you sing the Pratihara without knowing the god connected with it, your head will fall off.' Which god is that?"
1.11.9 "Food," he answered. "All these beings live by taking food into themselves. This is the god connected with the Pratihara. If you had sung it without knowing that god, your head would have fallen off after my warning—after my warning."
