If I had money, I would have proposed a fine of as much as I could expect to pay, for that would have done me no harm. But as it is, I have none—unless you are willing to set my fine at whatever amount I could pay. Perhaps I could pay you one mina of silver. I therefore propose that amount. But Plato here, men of Athens, and Crito and Critobulus and Apollodorus urge me to propose thirty minas, and they themselves offer to stand surety. I therefore propose that amount, and these men will be sufficient guarantors to you for the money.

If I had money, I would have proposed a fine in an amount I could pay, since that would not have harmed me. But as it is, I do not have any—unless you are willing to set my penalty at whatever amount I could pay. Perhaps I could pay you one mina of silver. So that is the penalty I propose.
But Plato here, men of Athens, along with Crito, Critobulus, and Apollodorus, urges me to propose a fine of thirty minas, with them acting as guarantors. So that is the penalty I propose, and these men will be reliable guarantors to you for the money.
