And why should I live in prison, enslaved to the authority appointed from time to time, the Eleven? Or shall I propose a fine, with imprisonment until I pay it? But that comes to the same thing I was just saying, for I have no money with which to pay. Shall I then propose exile? Perhaps you would accept that penalty for me. I would indeed be possessed by a great love of life, men of Athens, if I were so unreasoning as not to be able to reckon that you, though you are my fellow citizens, have been unable to endure my discussions

And why should I live in prison, enslaved to the authority that is appointed from time to time, the Eleven? Or should I propose a fine and imprisonment until I pay it? But that comes to the same thing I was saying just now, since I have no money with which to pay it. Should I then propose exile as my penalty? Perhaps you would accept that proposal. I would have to be very attached to life, men of Athens, if I were so irrational as to be unable to reason that you, my fellow citizens, have not been able to endure my conversations
