Letter 050 — L

50 of 172 parts in Letters to Josephine by Napoléon Bonaparte

Austerlitz, December 7, 1805.

I have concluded an armistice; peace will be made within eight days. I long to learn that you have arrived in Munich in good health. The Russians are leaving; they have suffered immense losses. More than 20,000 dead and 30,000 captured; their army has been reduced by three quarters. Buxhowden, their commander in chief, has been killed. I have 3,000 wounded and 700 to 800 dead. My eyes are a little sore; it is a common complaint and nothing serious. Goodbye, my friend; I long to see you again. I am going to sleep in Vienna tonight.

Austerlitz, December 7, 1805.

I have made an armistice, and peace will be concluded within eight days. I hope to hear that you have reached Munich in good health. The Russians are leaving after immense losses: over 20,000 dead and 30,000 taken prisoner, with their army reduced by three quarters. Their commander-in-chief, Buxhowden, has been killed. I have 3,000 wounded and between 700 and 800 dead. My eyes are a little sore; the complaint is widespread and quite insignificant. Goodbye, my friend; I very much want to see you again. Tonight I shall sleep in Vienna.
