Letter 042 — XLII

42 of 172 parts in Letters to Josephine by Napoléon Bonaparte

Original French

Adieu, mon amie; mille baisers. Mille compliments à ces dames.

Augsburg, October 23, 1805.

The last two nights have rested me well, and tomorrow I leave for Munich. I am summoning M. de Talleyrand and M. Maret to my side; I shall see little of them, and I am going to the Inn to attack Austria in the heart of its hereditary states. I would very much have liked to see you, but do not count on my sending for you unless there is an armistice or winter quarters. Farewell, my friend; a thousand kisses. Many compliments to the ladies.

Augsburg, October 23, 1805.

Two nights’ sleep have restored me, and I set out for Munich tomorrow. I have sent for M. de Talleyrand and M. Maret; I shall see little of them before going to the Inn, where I will strike Austria within its hereditary dominions. I should have loved to see you, but do not count on my calling you here unless we have an armistice or take up winter quarters. Goodbye, my dear, a thousand kisses. My compliments to the ladies.
