Musean translation

Mouseia’s complete machine-assisted Musean translation, made directly from the Sanskrit of F. Max Müller’s 1881 Anecdota Oxoniensia edition, all 32 sections, with the printed section numbers kept.

The Blessed One said: "What do you think, Subhūti? Does the Tathāgata have the fleshly eye?" "So it is, Blessed One; the Tathāgata has the fleshly eye." "Does the Tathāgata have the divine eye?" "So it is, Blessed One; he has the divine eye." "Does the Tathāgata have the eye of wisdom?" "So it is; he has the eye of wisdom." "Does the Tathāgata have the eye of dharma?" "So it is; he has the eye of dharma." "Does the Tathāgata have the Buddha-eye?" "So it is, Blessed One; he has the Buddha-eye."

"What do you think, Subhūti? As many grains of sand as there are in the Ganges, did the Tathāgata speak of them as sand?" "So it is, Blessed One; the Tathāgata has spoken of those grains as sand." "What do you think? As many Ganges rivers as there are grains of sand, and as many worlds as there are grains in all those rivers, would those worlds be many?" "Many, Blessed One, many, Sugata." "Subhūti, of as many beings as there are in those worlds, I know the many and various streams of thought. Why? 'Stream of thought, stream of thought': the Tathāgata has said this is no stream; therefore it is called a stream of thought. Why? Past thought cannot be apprehended; future thought cannot be apprehended; present thought cannot be apprehended." [18]

Plain English translation

Mouseia’s complete Plain English edition, made independently and directly from the same Sanskrit, covering all 32 sections with the printed section numbers.

The Buddha said: "Subhūti, what do you think? Does the Tathāgata have the physical eye?" "Yes, Blessed One, he has the physical eye." "Does he have the heavenly eye?" "Yes, he has the heavenly eye." "Does he have the eye of wisdom?" "Yes, he has the eye of wisdom." "Does he have the eye of the teaching?" "Yes, he has the eye of the teaching." "Does he have the Buddha-eye?" "Yes, Blessed One, he has the Buddha-eye."

"Subhūti, what do you think? Did the Tathāgata say that the sand in the Ganges is sand?" "Yes, Blessed One. The Tathāgata has said that those grains are sand." "Subhūti, what do you think? If there were as many Ganges rivers as there are grains of sand, and as many worlds as there are grains in all those rivers, would those worlds be many?" "Many, Blessed One, many, Sugata." "Subhūti, I know the beings in all those worlds, and I know their many and various streams of thought. Why? The Tathāgata said 'stream of thought, stream of thought,' but that is not really a stream, which is why it is called a stream of thought. Why? Past thought cannot be found. Future thought cannot be found. Present thought cannot be found." [18]
