Musean translation

Complete machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from the Sanskrit, independently of the Plain English edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.

5.2.1 It said, "What will be my food?" They answered, "Whatever there is, down to the food of dogs and birds." All this is food for Ana; Ana is its manifest name. For one who knows this, nothing is unfit to be food.

5.2.2 It said, "What will be my clothing?" "Water," they answered. That is why, before and after eating, people clothe it in water. One who knows this obtains clothing and does not remain naked.

5.2.3 After teaching this to Goshruti Vaiyaghrapadya, Satyakama Jabala said, "Even if one were to tell this to a dry stump, branches would spring from it and leaves would grow."

5.2.4 Now, if someone wishes to attain greatness, he should undertake consecration at the new moon. On the night of the full moon, he should stir a mash of every kind of herb into curds and honey. With the words "Svaha to the eldest and the greatest," he should offer clarified butter into the fire and let the residue fall into the mash.

5.2.5 With the words "Svaha to the best endowed," he should offer clarified butter into the fire and let the residue fall into the mash. With the words "Svaha to the firm foundation," he should offer clarified butter into the fire and let the residue fall into the mash. With the words "Svaha to fulfillment," he should offer clarified butter into the fire and let the residue fall into the mash. With the words "Svaha to the dwelling place," he should offer clarified butter into the fire and let the residue fall into the mash.

5.2.6 Then, withdrawing a little, he should place some mash in his cupped hands and recite softly: "Ama is your name, for all this is together with you. You are the eldest, the greatest, the king, the overlord. May you bring me to seniority, to preeminence, to kingship, to overlordship. May I become all this."

5.2.7 Then he sips it, one line at a time, with this Rig verse:Saying "We choose that of Savitar," he sips.Saying "We choose the god's nourishment," he sips.Saying "The finest, sustaining all," he sips.Saying "We swiftly turn our thoughts to Bhaga," he drinks it all.

5.2.8 After washing the bowl or cup, he lies down behind the fire, on a skin or on the bare ground, keeping silent and undisturbed. If he sees a woman in a dream, he should know that the rite has succeeded.

5.2.9 On this there is a verse:"When, in rites performed for a desire, one sees a woman in dreams, one should recognize success there,in that vision of a dream,in that vision of a dream."

Plain English translation

5.2.1 The life-breath asked, "What will be my food?" They answered, "Everything eaten as food, even by dogs and birds." All that is food for Ana, the breather. Its direct name is Ana. For someone who knows this, nothing is unfit to be food.

5.2.2 It asked, "What will be my clothing?" They answered, "Water." That is why people who are about to eat cover it with water before and after eating. A person who knows this gets clothing and does not go naked.

5.2.3 After teaching this to Goshruti Vaiyaghrapadya, Satyakama Jabala said, "If someone taught this even to a dry stump, branches would grow from it and leaves would sprout."

5.2.4 If someone wants to become great, they should undergo initiation at the new moon. On the night of the full moon, they should mix a mash of every kind of plant with yogurt and honey. They should offer clarified butter in the fire, saying, "Svaha to the oldest and best!" Then they should pour the remaining butter into the mash.

5.2.5 They should offer clarified butter in the fire, saying, "Svaha to the most prosperous!" Then they should pour the remaining butter into the mash. They should offer clarified butter in the fire, saying, "Svaha to the firm foundation!" Then they should pour the remaining butter into the mash. They should offer clarified butter in the fire, saying, "Svaha to fulfillment!" Then they should pour the remaining butter into the mash. They should offer clarified butter in the fire, saying, "Svaha to the home!" Then they should pour the remaining butter into the mash.

5.2.6 Then they should move back, put some mash in their cupped hands, and quietly recite, "Your name is Ama, for all this is with you. It is the oldest, the best, the king, the ruler. May it bring me the position of oldest and best, kingship and rule. May I become all this."

5.2.7 Then they should sip it, one line at a time, with this Rig verse:They sip, saying, "We choose that of Savitar."They sip, saying, "We choose the god's food."They sip, saying, "The best, which sustains everything."They drink all the rest, saying, "We quickly direct our thoughts to Bhaga."

5.2.8 After rinsing the bowl or cup, they should lie down west of the fire, on a skin or on the bare ground. They should remain silent and untroubled. If they see a woman in a dream, they should know that the rite has succeeded.

5.2.9 There is this verse about it:"When, in rites done to fulfill a wish,a person sees a woman in dreams, they should recognize successin that dream's sign,in that dream's sign."
