Musean translation

Complete machine-assisted Musean translation made directly from the Sanskrit, independently of the Plain English edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.

8.15.1 Brahma told this to Prajapati; Prajapati told it to Manu; Manu told it to his descendants. Having studied the Veda as prescribed in the teacher's household, in the time left over from serving the teacher, and having returned home, one should study the sacred text in a pure place within the household, train others in righteousness, establish all the senses within oneself, and harm no being except at sacred rites. Living thus for the whole of life, one reaches the world of Brahman and does not return, and does not return.

Om. May my limbs grow strong, and my speech, life-breath, sight, hearing, strength, and all my senses. All is the Brahman of the Upanishads. May I not reject Brahman; may Brahman not reject me. Let there be no rejection; let there be no rejection of me. May the virtues spoken of in the Upanishads abide in me, devoted to that Self; may they abide in me. Om. Peace, peace, peace.

Thus ends the Chandogya Upanishad.

Plain English translation

Complete machine-assisted Plain English translation made independently and directly from the Sanskrit, not from the Musean edition. All eight books and the closing invocation are retained.

8.15.1 Brahma taught this to Prajapati, Prajapati to Manu, and Manu to his descendants. After studying the Veda at the teacher's home according to the rules, in the time left over from serving the teacher, one returns home. Living with one's family in a clean place, one continues studying the Veda, brings up righteous people, settles all the senses in the Self, and does not harm any being except where sacred observance permits it. Someone who lives this way for their whole life reaches the world of Brahman and does not return—does not return.

Om. May my limbs, speech, life-breath, sight, hearing, strength, and all my senses grow strong. Everything is Brahman as taught in the Upanishads. May I not reject Brahman. May Brahman not reject me. May there be no rejection. May there be no rejection of me.May the virtues taught in the Upanishads be in me, who am devoted to the Self. May they be in me.Om. Peace, peace, peace.

The Chandogya Upanishad is complete.
