1.1 As for the two brothers — so the story is told — who had one mother and one father: Anubis was the name of the elder, and Bata the name of the younger. Now Anubis had a house, and he had a wife.
1.2 His younger brother lived with him like a son, and it was he who made the garments for him; and he went out after his herds to the pastures.
1.3 It was he who did the plowing for him; it was he who reaped for him; it was he who carried out for him every task there was in the fields. His younger brother, moreover, was a fine man—
