1.1 Beginning of the instruction composed by the Majesty of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Sehetepibre, life, prosperity, health, Son of Re, Amenemhat, life, prosperity, health, justified. He speaks in a declaration of truth to his son, the Lord of All:
1.2 Appearing as a god, he says: “Hear what I shall tell you, that you may rule the land and govern the riverbanks, acting beyond perfection. Guard yourself against the attendants who have achieved nothing, and against humanity when it turns its heart toward deceit.”
1.3 “Do not go near them. Do not stand alone. Do not fill your heart with trust in a brother; know neither friend nor sons. Do not create confidants for yourself.”
1.4 “A companion will bring nothing to completion. I have spent the night guarding your own heart for you, for I am not one of a man's followers on your day of misfortune.”
1.5 “I gave to the poor and raised the orphan; I brought the one who had nothing, like the one who did not exist, to his goal. It was the man who ate my food who raised a complaint against me for your sake. The man to whom I gave his arms—”
